A Bedtime Story

I want to give my children what I got -
A sign of middle age and childhood past:
’A story about Daddy – tell us what
You did when you were little – just like us’.
What survives our childhood we don’t choose -
We must forgive our childhood if we can:
We cannot cite our childhood as excuse -
Hurt is not a licence to do wrong.
And so I bring my children to my past,
A past that was unhappy as ‘twas good -
A story now, and so my kids have guessed
The happy ending, as indeed they should.
I tuck them in as sleep tugs at their lids.
I hope they’ll wish their childhood on their kids.
